4 out of 5 stars It took two orders to complete purchase   March 7, 2010
Donald W. Bryden (Walker Lake, Nevada)
The underwater housing is great. The problem is that if used underwater, it should have weights attached to make it buoyancy neutral. After receiving the housing, I had to order the weights. It would have been more convenient to have the information at hand to order both at the same time.

I'm a newly certified diver and was looking for an affordable but good quality option for taking underwater photos. The case for my SLR ran upwards of $1,400 so I tried the WP-DC34 with the Canon G11 and am absolutely thrilled with the results! Some of the controls (e.g. zoom) are easier to use with the housing than without. I'd recommend this for a serious amateur on a budget.

4 out of 5 stars Great Fun for Snorkeling (BIG Caveat: Have not tried at depth yet)   February 8, 2010

I had a great time using this underwater housing on a recent trip to Hawaii. I used it while snorkeling, so I have not yet tried it for scuba--so I cannot confirm or dispel the concerns about leaking that others have experienced, so that's why I am not giving it 5 stars at the moment. By the way, based on other people's reviews, I did stuff it with tissues and take it to the bottom of the pool to test for leaks before I put my camera in. Since the tissues came out dry, I figured I was okay.

I'm sure some will think I have no business doing a review without trying the housing at depth, but if there are any people who want to know how it performed for SNORKELING, here's what I really like about it--

Its size is not too big, but big enough that you can't forget you're holding onto a camera (I purchased a separate "floaty" wrist strap, but it seems that the housing will float anyway).

The buttons and dials are very easy to use, even with diving gloves on. They're nice and big. On the G11 (and maybe this is true on all cameras), the buttons for the "Scene" mode and for the "Video" mode are right next to each other. I set the "Scene" for underwater and so I was able to switch back and forth for still photos and video without a lot of scrolling.

The locking mechanism seems secure. In my experience, it would be very difficult to open the case accidentally.

Most of all--my pictures came out great. I did not notice any distortion from the housing and I didn't experience any fogging while shooting.

Basically, I had a really good time using it and I definitely would recommend it for snorkeling. After I've had a chance to use it on a dive, I'll update if necessary.

5 out of 5 stars Great UW Case for the Canon Powershot G11   February 3, 2010

Excellent case, particularly for the price. I live on the Big Island where the reef is only a 15min drive, thus get to use my gear every few weeks. I bought the G11 as an everyday carry camera and a dive camera. The case is setup with a tray and a Sea&Sea YS-110 flash unit. Photo quality is excellent, challenging much larger DSLR cameras for quality in a unit that costs far less. The only major issue with using the G11 underwater is the relatively slow shutter response.

Unlike some cases, all controls are accessible, with the sole exception of the thumbwheel. To adjust values that require the thumbwheel, hold the shortcut button down and use the left and right buttons on the rocker to adjust up and down. A two hand workaround, but there is a way.

The case is better than previous WP-DC21 for the G9, some of the controls have been moved for better access for fat fingers in dive gloves. I have yet to accidentally power off the camera when trying to take a photo with this case.

Yes, the case has no warranty, expected in an underwater case where a small grain of sand or poor maintenance of the seals can cause a leak. If you can not afford to lose a camera, don't take it 30m underwater.

This housing, a G11, and a one hour speed course in UW Digital Photography from Tim Blanton (Coco View Resort, Roatan, Honduras) resulted in some stunning pictures!
