Very satisfied April 24, 2010 Robert H. Johnson (Virginia) I read most of the evaluations on the Ryobi gas powered brush cutter and decided to purchase one--it was the best value.
As some state it is hard to start but so is my Toro blower. The Ryobi will start every time, it may take 5-20 pulls to do so. (Yes, I am pumping the ball to clear air from the gas line.) That said, it cuts beautifully. It is light and easy to handle. I've cleared several thousand square feet of catbriar/saw greenbriar and it keeps on chugging. If I put it down, it starts up immediately.
But the real value for me was customer service. I've been in computer and government customer service for 40 years and I know a quality company. The unit did arrive without the J-bar handle. I contacted TAP Enterprises and was amazed at the quick response -- they answered the phone--and prompt replacement. I would buy from them anytime.
BTW, I used Yahoo to buy something else and found Amazon far superior. Amazon clearly and efficiently submitted the purchase and followed it to conclusion -- including proactively asking for this review!
Great brush trimmer not weed eater April 17, 2010 Douglas G. Green (Rocky Face, GA) Works great on brush, 1" and smaller. Bought it Factory Reconditioned and a part was left out to mount weed eater and it is a pain to change it over anyway. It's OK, because I really needed it to cut brush, which it does great.
Piece of Junk October 17, 2009 David Hedrick (Richmond Hill, GA) I would not reecomend a Ryobi product to anyone after going through 2 of these in less than a month. The first one I received broke within 10 minutes of taking it out of the box and the second one broke after 3 uses. After looking at the other reviews Amazon should seriously consider removing this product from the market. If considering buying a weed trimmer definitely go with an echo or stihl, they cost more, but are much better products.
A bit heavy, but plenty of power October 1, 2009 G. Orwig There was a small problem in that the first unit to arrive was a mismatch. The box stated that it was the correct unit, but inside the box was an older line trimmer. The included instructions were for what should have been the correct unit, so they did not match up at all. I tried running the supplied unit, but it was difficult to start, and once running it would stop after about 10 minutes. One call to the supplier, CPO Ryobi, quickly cleared up the problem. Mine is a reconditioned unit (the reason for the fantastic price), and apparently the rebuild factory supplied some in the wrong boxes. A replacement was Fedexed to me along with a free return authorization for the old one. The replacement arrived two days later, and it works perfectly.
Pull the choke/throttle lock to the START position, seven presses of the primer, about three easy pulls on the cord, and away it goes. After about 10 seconds, tap the throttle, the choke snaps open and it drops to a smooth idle. At idle, the automatic clutch releases and the business end stops rotating. Touch the throttle, and away you go. It is easy to hit light grass with half throttle, and you can go through heavy stuff at full throttle. Even after a half hour of heavy use, it still drops back to a smooth, steady idle.
I've put a number of tanks of fuel through this unit now, and it still runs as good as when I got it. My only complaints ... with power comes some weight. It is a bit heavy, but it is easy to adjust the handle bar to get good balance without using the shoulder strap. It is loud enough to convince me to wear ear protection, even in hot weather. But then again, I don't like loud sounds. Finally, you get both a brush blade and a good string trimmer end. However, they are not separate snap-in attachments. You have to unbolt one from the business end and attach the other. Even with practice, this can take 15 minutes. The unit does take standard snap-in attachments, so I will keep an eye out for a bargain second lower end.
Summary ... make certain that the box contains what you ordered. As long as it does, you will be very pleased with what you get for the money. It is an inexpensive and well-reconditioned cutter/trimmer.
string trimmer August 22, 2009 Michael C. Boyer This is the third of these that I've bought - I have one set up for string trimming, one with a carbide toothed brush cutting blade and one with a tiller attachment (which also works good) - and, just like the first one, this unit was a workhorse right out of the box! Check the basics, fill it with fuel, crank it up and go to work, no problems. Plenty of power and for the price of this unit, which is about a third of all my neighbor's " famous name brand" trimmers, I can wear one out and get another in a few days if need be. That hasn't happened yet, though, and I'm on my third season with the first one I bought!
