Product Description Give your camera's harsh pop-up flash a makeover! The Puffer flash diffuser gives you the same flattering lighting style used by professionals. The Puffer simply slides into your camera's flash shoe and places the diffuser in front of your pop-up flash. The diffuser softens the light which gives you much better color and softer shadows, an all together better shot in a flash! Not the best fit for the shoe mount. Very effective in select circumstances. June 8, 2010 L. Perry (Tennessee) Will you like this? I would suggest that depends on you expectation. Do you want it to make all your pop-flash photos lock like they are professionally lighted? It won't do that! Do you expect it to make ALL your pop up flash photos look better? It won't do that either. Occassionally, when you are shooting something close but significantly higher or lower than you (and depending on the angles) it can even make it look worse (note the very horizontal shape). My point? Use it thoughtfully and selectively, and manage your expectations. Bc it IS useful to soften flash in your average snapshot. It's great for when you need a fill flash but you know it will be too close and harsh. Use it selectively, and you may find you really like it, as I do. And DON'T use it as an excuse to shoot with flash "on" all the time; I don't imagine you'll be happy with the results of that. There ARE generic version out there; I wasn't aware of them when I bought this. There are also other types of cheap/inexpensive/portable diffusers (like this: Opteka Universal Soft Screen Flash Diffuser for Canon, Nikon, Pentax, Olympus, & Kodak On-Camera Pop-Up Flashes) that you can try. You can even make your own. The biggest draw back of this one is that I DO very much find it difficult to mount onto the camera, and slightly awkward to remove. That is why I deducted a star. All in all, I think this (or another diffuser) is a great product for beginners bc it gives you more control over light with a minimal investment. If you stay with your hobby, you will want to improve that control. But I think this is simple place to start.
Nifty gadget May 30, 2010 Myron Hartsfield I recently purchased a Lumiquest soft screen and absolutely hated its floppiness and poor fit not to mention the hotspot that resulted when using it. So on to the Puffer. Not only does the Puffer look cool, but more importantly it works. I've only had it for a couple of days, but I have been pleased with the results. Perhaps I got one of the redesigned versions, but mine certainly seems to be quite sturdy. I am using it with my Canon SX1 IS and it fits well and it seems to me as though one would have to make a concerted effort to break it. I am pleased with both the effectiveness and the solid build of the Puffer. I've noticed no hot spots when using it. I would definitely recommend this to a friend. I really don't think that one could do better for the price.
Does exactly what it's designed to do. May 24, 2010 B. Braun (Detroit, MI) The first step to great flash photography is to get the light source off the camera. You can bounce the flash or physically remove the flash from the camera and trigger it using a cable or wireless device, or some combination of the two, but get the light source off the camera.
Having said that, most DSLR's come with a pop-up flash for a reason. Pop-up flash CAN be useful for fill flash and for casual use where dramatic flash lighting techniques are not required or are too cumbersome. For these purposes the Gary Fong Puffer is great. I'm very pleased with the results. It does exactly what it's designed to do and that's to diffuse the light coming from that tiny little light source on the top of your camera.
Junk will hurt your eye February 17, 2010 Richard (USN) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The Diffuser is very bad for the cameraman, because the flash actually bounce back, it can nearly blind your flash in secs. Just buy small diffuser bag that work better and won't hurt you eye. Also the puffer pop up is poor qualiry made, is too easy to make it fold apart and I worry the plastic might hurt the hot shoe since is poorly made and sometime hard to take it out. No diffuser pop up can replace external flash, biggest advntage of external flash is bounce up for indoor while you can't do with pop up, it won't look as nature compare to bounce flash.
Great for small everyday use February 11, 2010 Cia (Hayward, CA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is great for my pop-up flash just for everyday use. It's great for when you need to use your flash at smaller events and you don't want to use your flash attachment.
