Just what I've been looking for...August 31, 2010 juan j. oyola I've been looking for an affordable LCD cam light for quite a while. I even attempted to make my own. . . too awkward. I prefer clean and simple.
The Sima SL-20LX is great for the price. It's compact, bright, light weight and holds a charge for about an hour after a full charge. The straight bracket is a nice added value.
I suggest getting at least two if your going to need light for more time. Keep one charging while using the other.
The light is a bit blueish so I would like to have seen slits molded right on the casing to use with gels.
A wall powered option would have been useful. You can't operate the cam light while plugged into the charger. The documentation included gives fair warning about this but you have to open the packaging to find out.
It does not keep a charge while stored so make sure to charge it just before use. It won't light right out of the packaging so charge it for a few minutes then test it briefly then give it a full charge before the initial use.
If you are using a right angle bracket or the one that is included you may need to rotate the bracket in order to center the light on the subject. For future upgrades would suggest a universal joint on the cam light for pan and tilt control over the unit without having to resort to adapters. A modest price increase would be worth it.
If you shoot in rough conditions be aware of the plastic hardware.
I'm glad I bought it and have already recommended it to friends and colleagues. It's a nice addition to my AV kit.
My Little Pic saver.August 30, 2010 C. A. Brooks(Somewhere on the East Coast, USA) This light was introduced to me by a couple of guys at a photo event in a club in baltimore. They were both using it on a couple of DSLRs. So, I bought one too. I love it. I have to tweak my settings a little bit in my camera, but it works great. I'd recommend this light to anyone who needs a good, inexpensive light for photo work.
Gratitude for the reviewsAugust 23, 2010 Bob For Paul, David, & Jerry, thanks for some very provocative reviews on the little Sima SL-20LX. I read through your reviews quite thoroughly, and came to the conclusion that this unit may have a serious place in my lighting arsenal. One thing I'm still curious about, is how these little buggers would do shooting film. Has anyone tried that yet? If they're compatible with film, then I know I've just got to have a couple of them. Sure can't beat the price! Even without user replaceable batteries. If it dies, just trash the damn thing & pop for another one.
HD+Night Vision :)August 22, 2010 Patty Massey(INEZ, KENTUCKY, US) If you have an HD camera that dosen't have nightvision, I would recommend using the Sima SL-20LX Ultra-Bright Video Light!
Any HD camera can fit on the included bracket and for closeups, you can optionally get the LumiQuest Mini Softboxes available!

Lite BriteAugust 16, 2010 Edwardo Handy little things to have around. I ordered 3 of these since I tend to do a lot of interviews and live ENG-type stuff--wanted to be able to swap them out if one ran out of juice. The shoe mounts on these are plastic and one of them didn't tighten correctly and keeps falling off but the other two don't misbehave much. Another irritating thing is that you can't turn them on while they are charging. They also claim to be color balanced to 4500'. Would have been more convenient if they were 3.2K or 5.6K--but they only cost $30 so you still afford to buy some gels to slap on the front of them. You'll probably want to put some diffusion on the front anyway since they can be blindingly bright at close range. Light enough to gaff tape to a wall which I swear I'm gonna do eventually on a shoot to earn some cool points with the rest of the crew.
