4 out of 5 stars Long on results, short on documentation   August 28, 2010
Timothy J. Finneran (Spokane, WA USA)
This item "saved the day" for me when trying to recover data from a friends PC.
The documentation could use a re-work, but all in all, it's a very versatile adapter.
It's worth the $$.

4 out of 5 stars Not pretty, but works   August 27, 2010

Not as elegant as a docking station but it gets the job done. However, shortly after purchase, the power supply burnt out. No matter, I went to microcenter and spent another $10 on a better PC connector power supply. Alternatively, I could have just opened up the case of my desktop, but long term, I would be using this with my laptop also. Just recently, I bought an SSD and cloned my laptop HD with this device and Acronis True Image Home Edition. Worked beautifully.

5 out of 5 stars Worked on my 1.8" Hitachi Travelstar (60gb ... via Apricorn EzBus Mini)   August 25, 2010

The 1.8" Hitachi TravelStar (60GB) was the drive Apricorn included in the EZBus Mini (60GB) that I purchased five or six years ago. Two days ago that drive failed. Of course I had no backup, of course I had a ton of data on it, and of course I needed it restored asap. I pulled the EZBus Mini apart and notice that the cable connecting the USB A plug to the header was nearly pinched off. I hoped it was just the USB cable. Tried repairing myself. No joy. Kept trying to mount the drive (insert/pull the USB connecter). Started imagining I heard the drive scratching the platters, started imagining that I heard the read/write heads dislodged. Started freaking out. Went searching for adapters to troubleshoot / isolate the PCB adapter in the EZ Bus Mini Enclosure (the PCB marries the USB to the IDE interface of the drive. I found this and ordered it immediately (mostly because it had such great reviews).

Those reviews are well founded: I was scared to death I wouldn't be able to pull the data off of this drive. When it arrived I nearly shredded the box trying to get this thing running asap. I was worried because the drive I needed it for has 1.8" platters (very small drive) and the only interfaces that this tool says it supports are the IDE interfaces for 2.5, 3.5 and 5.25 drives. Did some more research. Found that the IDE interface for most drives with 1.8" platters is the same Interface for drives with 2.5" platters. Became hopeful and ordered.

Got it in the mail. Plugged the drive into the tool and plugged the tool into the USB port on my computer and then... it worked!!

NOTE! Windows XP (SP3 + just about all recent updates exceptingting .net) didn't find the drive as quickly as I expected. I kind of started to panic because there was (what I thought) was a pronounced delay. Normally, my CPU finds (and posts them in File Explorer) new hard drives in less 15 seconds or so. This one took a minute. Maybe a minute and a half. But at the end of that minute and a half I was looking at the contents of this drive!!!!

NOTE: This is a diagnostic tool. It did exactly what I needed it to do. It saved 30Gb worth of my life. Other reviewers knock it because of its appearance, but IMHO this thing is a beauty queen.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful product   August 24, 2010

This adaptor rocks. I was staring in dismay at a pair of old HDs I wanted to read / copy / format and a newly deceased 3.5" IDE enclosure when this little gem caught my eye. Operation couldn't be simpler, and I'm future-proofed with the SATA adaptor. Much, much simpler than an enclosure, all of which in my experience are rather finicky / fragile. Highly recommended.
