SanDisk V-Mate Video Memory Card Recorder brief review January 6, 2009 Ben Gordon (Daly City, CA United States) Works OK 640X480 Max resolution, is temperamental, needs periodic reboots. Use class 4 or better media for decent playback.
Don't waste your money!! December 27, 2008 Maria 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I had good expectations for this product but it let me down. The fact that it has no buttons, forces you to use the remote, which has to be pointed directly at the box at about to inches in distance. But I don't mind the defects above, what really got me mad was that I had to press every single button about 20 times until it finally picked up the signal. It was not a battery problem because I changed them, and one day I wanted to record a show and it took me ten minutes of pushing the "on" button to make it work, so I got sick and frustrated, grabbed a screw driver and ripped the remote in two. now I have no remote which means no v-mate. What a good way to spend $60.
Depends on what you use it for....but it works great for me. December 9, 2008 D. P. Randolph (Arizona, USA) I notice that in the negative reviews people are using the V-Mate for transfer to cell phones and PSP devices. Needing reading glasses at my age, I don't want to watch movies on a 2" screen that often. However, when transferring video from VHS to MP4 for watching on a computer or TV, this recorder is GREAT! The first thing you should do after you purchase it is to go to Sandisk's site and download the new firmware (I wonder how many critics did that before they complained), install it and check the settings. By using the MP4 setting with the highest resolution, the video produced is as clear and smooth as the original. (Remember the video is only as good as its weakest link. Jumpy or low quality VHS doesn't miraculously get better.) This does fill the flash memory card faster, but if you are preserving family videos or obscure tapes this allows for high quality videos for DVD transfer or just to show from the V-Mate itself. What is high quality? I just showed a video from VHS on a 60" television a few days ago with excellent reproduction. To me, the concept of having hours of video on a memory card half the size of a postage stamp is still hard to comprehend. This device, or something similar, will be the future of video storage and transfer.
2ND ONE I PURCHASED October 24, 2008 J. Lawrence (New Jersey) I think having purchased a second one speaks for itself. While dressing at 5 AM I can record the morning news on a SD Micro memory card and watch the news one hour later on the train. No conversions are necessary. You can record from a camcorder, a DVD player (movies) or cable TV and watch it immediately. I watch my recordings on a Sandisk sansa view mp3 player: however, I have also used it on my LG phone. It also works fine on any TV using a resolution of 640 x 480, 320 x 280 and lower resolutions for internet purposes.
Scandisk V-Mate October 13, 2008 Sam Pan I've been using my Scandisk V-Mate for about two weeks and so far it has performed as I expected which is good. I'm satisfied with the performance. Sometimes it is slow to respond to the remote but for this price I did not expect perfection or studio quality video. It does pretty much play back the same quality video that was it received to record. TV playback is better than on a computer but I don't believe it was really meant for computer playback. I'm very satisfied with this product. I'm still trying to think of ways to use my V-Mate.
