5 out of 5 stars I like it....   January 6, 2009
W. Smith (Between here and there.)
I've had an Ultra and Mino. The Mino HD has much improved video, less jerky.....but indoors the video has much more noise. The video is sharper and plays back better if you can get over a little noise you'll love it. The FlipShare software is an improvement. I use SONIC DVD software to edit and burn. The DVDs look great, better than the video on my PC.

3 out of 5 stars I have the Mino and the Ultra, I prefer the Ultra for many reasons...   January 5, 2009

I have the MinoHD and the Ultra and the same laptop I use for high-end gaming.

I have jerky playback and the included FlipShare program takes forever with the MinoHD, yet no problems with the Ultra.

The primary reason is the resolution, understood, but this is the same high-end laptop.

Playback on my HDTV with the Mino was pretty disappointing, however on ANOTHER TV where you can manually set the resolution to 720p, it looked GREAT. What this means is your TV output playback experience is directly affected by your TV's ability to scale up or scale down; mine cannot be manually changed to 720p, it recognizes it as 480i. :(

With the lower resolution of the Ultra (yet still looks fantastic) - I have not found a TV where the Ultra didn't look good.

Also, the Ultra plays all of the videos with no jerkiness on the same laptop that also plays new DVD movies without a glitch. How is it that a Mino playback comes out jerky ? Sure, YOUR computer might play it fine, but it should be fine out of the box, regardless of drivers, codecs, bla bla. The Ultra is fine out of the box.

In summary:
1. I like the Ultra better than the Mino and the home-video quality is fine with the Ultra, especially if you'll be using it on the Web or You Tube or what not, your friends/family will just be glad someone didn't use a camera phone to take video.
2. The Mino must be USB charged which I think is a "minus" - I *personally* would rather carry double AA batteries that the Ultra uses (it does not USB charge) so that I can record as needed and swap out batteries and get instant power, versus waiting for USB to charge up over several hours.
3. Because of the higher resolution, 2 minutes of video on the MINO may be 70mb in size!! 2 minutes of video on the ULTRA is half that, 33mb. Who really wants to stream or download 70-200mb of video?
4. The buttons on the MINO are too sensitive and the glossiness is prone to fingerprints. The Ultra is matte and has good button feel.
5. For price, performance, and video quality, the ULTRA is by far the better value! I wish I could trade it back in for an Ultra and carrying case. :) P.S. if you're putting this on You Tube, the Mino resolution buys you nothing, since it will get scaled down to You Tube's size...

4 out of 5 stars Nice, small and sleek   January 4, 2009

Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R1SWG7K6YV7VFK I am also the owner of a Flip Ultra of which I love. Therefore, I really thought I'd love the Flip Mino HD just as much, well not quite. While, I do like this sleek camcorder, I don't like the smaller screen. When trying to do a self vid, I'm not sure if I'm in the frame. The HD quality did not seem as great as I thought it would be, but I did like the smaller size and the smooth casing. I also like the fact the camcorder charges via USB and not by batteries. It is however a great little camcorder to catch those moments on video when you otherwise would not have.

We love this product. With the portability and ease of use - we will use this way more then the old Camcorder. The pouch that comes with it is even well made enough as not to have to buy a 3rd party protector.

Again - all around good product.

1 out of 5 stars Disappointing quality, software wouldn't install, sent it back   January 4, 2009

Pros:
very portable
easy to video with

Cons:
No optical zoom
Washed out colors
Sound distorted when videoing musical instrument
Software wouldn't install
Video format won't play back on Windows Media Player, is jumpy on Real Player

My husband bought this for me as a Christmas present thinking it would be better quality and easier to use than taking video with my Canon Powershot G9. Since the colors are washed out, the sound distorts while videoing music (and there's no way to adjust recording levels), there's no optical zoom and the flipshare software wouldn't install, it did not work out that way.

Flipshare crashed halfway through installing it off the camcorder onto my computer (Windows XP system) via USB. I downloaded the latest version of flipshare from the website to my hard drive - same installation problem. I emailed technical support (they provide no phone number, only an email form) who sent me two unhelpful replies. First they sent instructions on how to install flipshare which I'd already tried. Then they sent a link to the latest version of flipshare on their site and told me to copy that over the version on the camcorder. There's no way that would fix the problem installing flipshare on my hard drive. At that point I gave up emailing them and returned the camcorder to Amazon since the quality was also not what we had hoped for.
